MLK Day of Service

Make it a day ON, not a day OFF!

Throughout his life, Dr. King sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. Working alongside individuals of all ages, races and backgrounds, Dr. King encouraged Americans to come together to strengthen communities, alleviate poverty, and acknowledge dignity and respect for all human beings. Service, he realized, was the great equalizer.

"...He who is greatest among you shall be a servant. That's the new definition of greatness…Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.”
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (From the sermon, “The Drum Major Instinct”, delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church February 4, 1968)

How you can get Involved:

This annual community service event planned by the Ohio Union's ServeCorps takes place on MLK Day each January. There is no pre-registration. Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Groups are encouraged to attend, but are encouraged to stay together in line.

Operation Breakthrough

Right after school ended I embarked on an 11 hour journey to Kansas City, Missouri. I'm not gonna lie it was a little awkward at first hopping in a 12 person van with 9 strangers but by the end of the week our diverse group of Ohio State students became a family. When Neil and Christine first told us we were going to be a lot busier than some of the other Buck-i-Serv groups I was a little disappointed. However, reflecting on it now I would not have it any other way. Monday thru Friday from about 9 am- 3 or 5 pm (depending on the day) our group worked at Operation Breakthrough. Operation Breakthrough is a place for hundreds of children less than one year old to 18 years old. Most of these children are living in poverty and outside of Operation Breakthrough they live dangerous lives. Operation Breakthrough provides a safe environment for these children to grow up and lead successful lives. When we first arrived at Operation Breakthrough Monday morning, we watched a movie about this history of Operation Breakthrough which documented some of the children's lives that go there. Needless to say, seeing the harsh lives some of these children live in, many of our group members had tears in our eyes by the end of the movie. Their lifestyles made me more grateful and appreciative of the life I am living. We got the opportunity to work with babies and children up to 5 years old in the morning which was a blast because they were so cute and loving! In the afternoon we got to help prepare Operation Breakthrough for their summer session. Our group painted bookcases, changed bulletin boards, packed bags with school supplies and made signs for various classrooms. They certainly kept us busy! After dinner and reflections at night we were all so tired we passed out on our cots in the church we stayed at. Operation Breakthrough was truly a rewarding trip. I would go back to Kansas City, Missouri and Operation Breakthrough with my group in a heart beat. I think the children as well as teachers and other volunteers at Operation Breakthrough really appreciated all our hard work that we put into making Operation Breakthrough a better place.
